Today my boss told me i cannot go into work because my hair has blue through it. Can he do this?

My hair is dark to start with, so the blue isn't like in ya face. And the blue is fairly dark, so when i tie my hair back, you can't see it THAT much (you can mostly only see it when it's out - but i just wont wear it out at work).

My uniform is blue anyway, so it's not really a contrast.

Can my boss tell me i'm not allowed to come into work until i either recolour it "normal" or let it grow out?

He's not allowed to fire me for it, is he?

Companies are allowed to have dress codes, which can include hair and jewelry and tattoos. They are paying you, so while you are on the clock, they can tell you what to do.

Is it in your employee handbook? If not, then no.

yes he can. If you work in a customer service type job, you need to look professional. Dye it brown.

no

A lot of places do not allow "unnatural" colors. Blond or red may be OK, but not blue.

I'd speak to an HR representative if your company has it. Normally, if the dress code doesn't forbid it then you shouldn't be penalized for it. I'm sure there are exceptions though.

I work for County government and while our code says nothing about hair color, because I am in a public position I can't very well go around dying my hair "odd" colors.

This could be the case for you also depending on your position.

I'm not sure who you can ask officially other than your HR (if you have one).

I'm not a lawyer--gotta be up-front about that--but I'm pretty sure it depends entirely on whether there's a dress-and-grooming code or guideline in place at your job and whether it's consistently enforced.

Whether it's outdated, uber-conservative, or downright ridiculous, if there are rules about what employees look like at work, your boss can refuse to let you work until you conform to the rules. If you refuse, he can fire you.

Often, when the "offending" employee is a good one, the boss can turn a blind eye toward the code violation. Uneven enforcement can be challenged, so pay attention to whether other employees have elements about their dress or grooming which are "edgy."

Get out any employee handbooks, papers, etc. and see if there are rules.

Most businesses these days hire as "at will" employment. That means if your boss is in a bad mood that day and your breath stinks, you can get fired and its legal. So most likely you can get fired for blue highlights. Ask your boss if you were hired "at will" then you will have your answer.

Any unnatural haircolor (like blue) is considered unprofessional. You are there representing the company so yes, your boss can send you home until you do something about your hair. If you refuse, then yes he can fire you for insubordination and not following company protocol.

Sorry to tell you this, but yes, he can dismiss you and/or make the demand that you not come into work based on your hair color. The same goes for piercings or tattoos or style of dress.

An employer has the right to set a business image. You have the right to not work there if you choose not to abide by his/her requirements. But he/she is well within the law to terminate you should you not comply.

Absolutely yes. He can send you home. He can fire you. Doesn't have to be in the handbook. He is the boss, he decides. Hope it wasn't permanent dye ....

Yes he or she can regulate your hair and clothing and you can be fired if you refuse to abide by the regulations. All companies reserve the right to ask employees to dress in a manner that fits the company's image. They get away with this because you are working for them on your own accord. The way they look at it, if you are unhappy with their rules, you have the option to seek employment elsewhere. You will have to decide if your fashion statement is worth it to you.

Do you have an employee handbook and/or a dress code policy? Ask your boss where the policy is that states you must conform to certain dress and hair styles.

Some states are more liberal than others in interpreting work style restrictions, but the most prevailing legal interpretation is that if you are in a customer-facing role, the employer has the right to limit your personal style choices (hair color, tattoos, facial piercings, etc.)

If you are not in a customer-facing role, then the court generally wants to see some sort of rationale - for example, if you work on a loading dock and you have body piercings, it could be a safety hazard because those piercings could get caught on something.

As far as getting fired, anyone can be fired for failing to conform to a policy (or, really, for anything these days - it's an at-will work environment in most places.) IMO, your boss is reacting unnecessarily harshly - our receptionist has pink streaks in her hair at the moment and she is a very capable employee - but bottom line, he's the boss and what he says, goes.

Of course he's allowed to fire you. How can you even think you're somehow legally entitled to blue hair? That's shameful. He's the boss and can set rules as to things like that. If you worked for me I'd fire you too.
